At CinePal (“we,” “our,” or “us”), we respect your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal data. This policy explains how we collect, use, store, and disclose information when you use our website, mobile application, or mood-based recommendation features.

By accessing or using the Service, you consent to the data practices described in this policy.

1. Information We Collect

To provide a highly personalized, mood-based movie tracking experience, we collect minimal, essential information:

  • Account Data: your name, username, email address, and account credentials.
  • User Preference Data: movies and TV shows saved to your Watchlist, ratings, streaming services, and entries in your Film Diary.
  • Usage Context Data: non-identifiable metrics such as which of our mood buttons are selected most often.
  • Voluntary Location Context: a general region used to improve streaming availability and the Pan-African Spotlight. We do not track or store precise GPS coordinates.

2. The CinePal Sync Data Framework

Private matching for long-distance movie nights

  • Temporary Connection: a shareable CinePal Sync link creates a temporary, cloud-based handshake.
  • Restricted Access: the system reads only the alphanumeric film ID codes in each Watchlist to calculate overlap.
  • No Data Exposure: personal emails, account passwords, settings, and unrelated logs are never shared or exposed to a partner. Closing or resetting the session dissolves the temporary bridge.

3. Third-Party Services and Analytics Data

  • Metadata APIs: public services such as TMDB provide posters, trailers, and cast lists. They do not receive access to your personal CinePal profile.
  • Affiliate & Streaming Redirects: outbound services such as Netflix, Showmax, and Prime Video may use their own cookies or tracking pixels. Their own privacy policies govern that collection.

4. Data Retention and Security

  • Data Security: we use standard industry security protocols to prevent unauthorized access, alteration, or disclosure.
  • User Control & Deletion: you may modify profile details at any time. On a verified deletion request, your profile, Watchlists, and historical Film Diary records are erased from active databases.

5. Compliance and Updates

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in streaming systems or data-compliance guidance. Material changes will be identified by updating the date at the top of this policy.
